Cricket: Marco Jansen replaces injured Pretorius in South Africa World Cup squad

Marco Jansen replaces injured Pretorius in South Africa World Cup squad

Earlier this month, South Africa suffered a huge blow with Dwaine Pretorius being injured in the 1st ODI against India.

The bowling all-rounder was a crucial part of the South Africa T20I set up. In his last T20I appearance he bagged 3 for 26 including the key wicket of Suryakumar Yadav.

Marco Jansen who replaced Pretorius in the ODI squad for the India series is now called up for the T20I World Cup.

Jansen was part of the XI in the 3rd ODI against India where he finished with figures of none for 43 in 5.1 overs.

He has replaced Dwaine Pretorius in the T20 World Cup squad. But the competition is quite tough when it comes to making it to the playing XI.

South Africa will face India and Pakistan in Super 12

South Africa will face India and Pakistan in Super 12

South Africa are placed in Group 2 of the Super 12 which also features India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.

India recently defeated South Africa in a T20I and an ODI series at home. The other two teams toured New Zealand for a T20 tri-series.

Of these three, India and Pakistan will be the biggest competitors on South Africa’s road to finals.

In head to head stats against Pakistan in T20Is since 2021, South Africa trail 2-5 in 7 matches.

Whereas, against India, South Africa’s head to head count stands at 3-4 in 2022 from a total of 8 matches.

Has the recent ODI loss hurt South Africa’s momentum?

South Africa fielded their T20 World Cup squad against India in the recent ODI series.

While playing against India’s new-look ODI side that featured none of the players from India’s World Cup squad, South Africa were bowled out for 99 runs.

In the series decider in Delhi, even with all of their best players in the side, South Africa were bowled for 99 by what can be called as India’s second XI.

Quinton de Kock, Aiden Markram, Rilee Rossouw, and David Miller will need to get the Proteas back on track.

Before they play India again, the Proteas will face the table toppers from Group B of round 1 in their opening game followed by Bangladesh.

These two matches should be enough to get South Africa back to winning ways before they face India and Pakistan in consecutive matches.

Tristan Stubbs also part of the South Africa T20 World Squad

The 15-man Proteas squad for the T20 World Cup features some of the best T20 players with plenty of experience.

Rossouw, Miller, QDK with the bat and the pace attack of Nortje, Rabada, and Ngidi form a strong core of South Africa’s T20 setup.

These players have played T20 cricket all around the world including IPL. And they have made the highest impact for a number of different teams and T20 franchises.

To this squad, South Africa have added two young and promising players – Tristan Stubbs and Marco Jansen.

The wicket-keeper batsman Tristan Stubbs is an aggressive player and has scored at a strike rate of 191 in his short career so far.

Jansen was impressive in the Tests on India’s tour of South Africa last year but has played just the one T20I so far.

Here is South Africa’s 15-man squad for the T20 World Cup –

Temba Bavuma (c), Quinton de Kock, Rilee Rossouw, Reeza Hendricks, Heinrich Klaasen, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Wayne Parnell, Tristan Stubbs, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje, Marco Jansen, Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi

Will South Africa finally get rid of the ‘choker’ tag?

In the previous edition of the T20 World cup, South Africa put on a great show in Super 12 and were out of the semis by a whisker.

This time around, they have a strong chance of making it to the finals. Their competitors are in great touch but have some big concerns.

India will be missing Bumrah and have a few fielding issues to deal with. Pakistan are dependent on their openers to win them matches.

Whereas, Bangladesh are still looking for changes to the squad as confidence is at an all time low after their performance in the NZ tri-series.

As such, if South Africa play their cards right, they can make their way to the finals of the T20 World Cup 2022.
