Bad news coming in for India fans ahead of the T20 World Cup 2022. The star pace bowler, Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the ongoing South Africa T20I series.
His recurring back injury has raised doubts over his T20 World Cup participation. The chances of Bumrah recovering before India’s opening fixture in the tournament are bleak as of now.
However, the team management has not given up hope yet. Bumrah had recently made a comeback after missing from action for two months due to back injury.
While there is no official statement yet, Mohammad Siraj is likely to be named Bumrah’s replacement for the South Africa series.
India’s T20 World Cup troubles increase with Bumrah’s injury
India missed Bumrah’s services already during the Asia Cup T20. And now with doubts over his participation in the T20 World Cup, India’s selection headaches will only get worse.
India’s team selection came under a lot of criticism in the Asia Cup as they failed to strike the right balance. The death overs are a key area where India needs improvement and that’s where Jasprit Bumrah comes into the picture.
In his absence, it would be up to the young Arshdeep Singh and Harshdeep Patel to strike with key wickets.
Will India turn to Mohammad Shami for T20 World Cup?
Mohammad Shami was named as standby player for the T20 World Cup in Australia. He missed the Australia T20Is and the first T20I against South Africa due to covid.
However, the pacer with a World Cup hat-trick has now tested negative and is fit for selection. Could team India think of Shami as a replacement for Bumrah if the latter missed out on the T20 World Cup?
Mohammad Shami would bring a lot of experience to the side along with pace and great seam bowling. His impact in the bowling attack would be immense.
India should call Shami for the remaining T20Is against South Africa to test his readiness for the T20 World Cup.
Bumrah might need more than 6 weeks to recover, Pakistan clash 3 weeks away
Jasprit Bumrah will report to the National Cricket Academy on September 30. The NCA will investigate the injury and start the treatment. Now, if the injury is serious, it can take more than 6 weeks for the star pacer to recover.
In the best case scenario in such an instance of back injury, a player might recover within 4 weeks. With India’s clash against Pakistan just 3 weeks away, Bumrah’s return to India setup is quite unlikely.
At the moment, all of India would be praying for Bumrah’s injury to not be of serious nature. In any case, India needs to look for a replacement.
