Group B Preview: Australia, England favourites to top the group, Namibia and Scotland could play spoilsports

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 has brought together the world’s top teams in a coveted competition hosted by the United States and the West Indies. The tournament promises to provide thrilling action, some of which has already been on display on the first three days.

If you didn’t already know, the T20 World Cup 2024 is the grandest edition of the competition, with a total of 20 teams competing in it compared to 16 in the previous edition. The format has also been changed with teams divided into four different groups. The top two teams from each group will then advance to the Super Eight stage, where they would be split into two groups.

With the tournament already underway, we take a look at the potential winner of Group B, which consists of the defending champions England, Australia, Scotland, Oman and Namibia. Two games have been played in Group B so far, with Namibia beating Oman in a super over after a low-scoring thriller and England settling for one point against Scotland with the game ending in a no result due to rain.

The biggest clash in this group will be the two Ashes rivals England and Australia taking on each other at Bridgetown, Barbados on June 8th. The last time these two teams faced each other in T20 cricket was ahead of the previous edition, where England won the series by 2-0. Their match in the 2022 World Cup was abandoned without a ball being bowled.

Upcoming fixtures Group B

Australia vs Oman

Odds for Australia win: 1.01 (22Bet)
Odds for Oman win: 14.50 (22Bet)

Australia will begin their 2024 T20 World Cup campaign on June 6th when they play against Oman at Bridgetown, Barbados. The Australian side, led by Mitchell Marsh will be heavy favourites ahead of the game and has the odds of 1.01 on 22Bet.

These two teams have not faced each other at any level but there is a clear gulf in quality between them. Australia are former World T20 champions, having won the trophy in 2021. Earlier this year, they smashed New Zealand in a three-match series by 3-0.

Oman were terrific with the ball in their game against Namibia, where they tied the game while defending just 109 before losing in a super over. With the pitches being tricky, they will fancy themselves to pull off an upset. You can bet on Oman to win at 14.50 on 22Bet.

Namibia vs Scotland

Odds for Namibia win: 1.95 (Parimatch)
Odds for Scotland win: 1.85 (Parimatch)

Namibia and Scotland are set to lock horns at Bridgetown, Barbados on June 6th in what is a contest between two teams that are on the same level.

The two teams have competed against each other three times, with Namibia winning all three games. But despite that Scotland are slight favourites to win this game. One of the reasons could be that they smashed 90/0 in 10 overs in a washed out game against England. You can back Scotland to win this match on Parimatch at 1.85 odds.

Namibia made a mess of the run-chase against Oman but they can not be taken lightly. They have been one of the most impressive associate teams in the past few years. If you want to bet Namibia’s win, do it on 22Bet where you will get better odds of 2.08.

Who will top Group B?

As per the bookmakers, only Australia and England have any real chance of being the Group B winner. Australia are the favourites to top the group and you can bet on them at 1.727 on 22Bet. England have slightly higher odds of topping Group B with the odds of 2.30 on Betwinner.

Australia are aiming to hold the World titles across all three formats at once, having won the latest editions of World Test Championship and ODI World Cup. Earlier this year, they defeated West Indies in a three-match T20I series by 2-1 and followed it up with a 3-0 clean sweep against New Zealand. The reigning T20 World champions England came into this tournament on the back of a 2-0 series victory over Pakistan.

As we know, the three associate teams in the group – Namibia, Scotland and Oman are weaker sides on paper, compared to the two giants of world cricket. Australia will be confident of winning all three games while England were unlucky to not have a shot at a victory against Scotland. But they can still top the group if they win their remaining three games, including against Australia.

That brings us to the crucial clash between the Ashes rivals Australia and England. The two teams are equally matched and there’s not much to separate them. Looking at their last seven completed encounters, England won six games while Australia claimed only one. Heading into this game, Both teams have strong top order but have several out of form players in the middle order. The bowling attacks also have similar strength and so the match could go either way.
