Cricket: Bumrah out of Asia Cup with injury, KL Rahul back as vice-captain

Bumrah out of Asia Cup with injury, Kohli and Rahul return
A key name missing from India’s T20I squad for Asia Cup 2022 is that of Jasprit Bumrah. The right-arm pacer is out of the tournament with back injury while Virat Kohli and KL Rahul are back in the squad.
Bumrah played his last India game on July 14 against England. He had back spasms for quite some time and after the England series, the 28-year old was finally rested while India toured West Indies.
KL Rahul, who missed the entire T20I series against West Indies due to injury, is back in the squad for the Asia Cup. He will continue to be Rohit’s deputy in the leadership.

India squad for Asia Cup 2022 – Bumrah and Harshal out with injury

Another pacer out with injury is Harshal Patel. The RCB pacer was out of the West Indies series too. The young and rising talent, Arshdeep Singh has caught the attention of all in recent times. He’s in the squad for Asia Cup 2022.
Here is the full 15-member India T20I squad –
Rohit Sharma (capt), Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Deepak Hooda, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, KL Rahul (vice-capt), Rishabh Pant, Dinesh Karthik, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Arshdeep Singh, Ravi Bishnoi, Avesh Khan, Yuzvendra Chahal.
Surely, India will miss the pace and accuracy of Bumrah. Bhuvi packs a lot of experience and can put India on top with his swing in the early overs. Nonetheless, the wicket-taking ability of Bumrah in the death overs, his accurate yorkers, have no replacement in the current India squad.

Who will be India’s death overs bowler – Arshdeep or Avesh?

With no Shami and Bumrah in the squad, there are huge shoes to fill in for the current crop of pace bowlers. During the recent Windies tour, both Arshdeep and Avesh bowled in the death overs with the former being more effective when India bowled first.
Rohit Sharma showed great confidence in Arshdeep bringing the 23-year old back into the attack to bowl 3 overs in the death. While the left-arm pacer has played only 6 T20Is, he has shown great promise and will be key player to watch out for in the Asia Cup T20.

Who will open with Rohit Sharma?

The return of KL Rahul and Virat Kohli has clearly impacted the T20I setup. Will it be wise to have Rahul open with Rohit? Or is Suryakumar Yadav better suited to India’s new approach to batting in the powerplay?
These are the questions the team management would try to answer ahead of the Asia Cup. Whether it was Suryakumar, Ishan, or Shreyas Iyer, India’s top order went all guns blazing in almost every T20I match post-World Cup.
KL Rahul last played a T20I in November of 2021 against New Zealand at home. He scored 98 runs at a strike rate of 124 in the 3-match series. Contrast this with Suryakumar’s recent form and his approach to batting, and we have a winner.

Where do the returnees fit in this setup?

Where do the returnees fit in this setup
Kohli’s strike rate hasn’t been impressive during the last IPL season. The former India skipper seemed to be focused on scoring runs rather than the rate at which he scores.
KL Rahul has already declared that strike rates are overrated. Unless these two quickly adapt to the changing philosophy of batting in the new T20I setup, India can be looking at a handicap in the Asia Cup.
Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant are tasked with finishing roles in the lower middle order. And that depends on how well the returnees play their roles.

Can India beat Pakistan without Bumrah?

India vs Pakistan Asia Cup 2022 When Where

Though there is no Bumrah, Shami, and Harshal, Indian selectors have curated a well balanced squad. If the top-order gets things right this time around, Pakistan will stand no chance of dominating India at the world stage again.
Even after the squad was announced, the odds on betting sites weren’t affected much. The exclusion of Bumrah hasn’t dented India’s chances and the odds are still in India’s favor.
